What is ILF?
ILF is an international association of independent law firms.
How old is ILF?
ILF was organized in March, 1998 though the efforts of its founder and initial Chairman, William Stockler, of Stockler Brunton in London, England.
How many members does ILF have?
ILF currently has members in approximately 70 cities worldwide and is expanding.
How much does it cost to join ILF?
Current annual dues are USD 350. Current annual dues for branch or other offices are USD 75. These amounts may change if approved by the members. Dues are used to fund marketing and other initiatives.
Are there any other costs involved in belonging to ILF?
The membership may, from time to time, approve special assessments to fund marketing or other projects. Members are responsible for paying their own travel expenses and conference registration fees to attend ILF conferences.
What is the size of the firms that are members of ILF?
Typically firms are small to mid-sized, although a few are larger.
If our firm joins ILF, can it participate in other international or regional law firm associations?
Yes, there is no exclusivity requirement. Members are urged, however, whenever possible to refer business to each other.
How often do ILF members meet?
Members generally meet twice a year, once on an international basis and once on a hemispheric basis. The conferences include both a full-day meeting and social events. Conferences are always scheduled on weekends to avoid or minimize interference with practices and schedules. Conferences present an excellent opportunity to network and develop personal relationships with other members, which in turn can lead to business referrals.
Does our firm need to attend conferences?
Yes. Members are expected to send at least one delegate to each annual international and hemispheric conference.
What is the application process after an application has been submitted?
If ILF does not already have a member in the city where your firm is located, and that city is of interest to ILF, your application will be referred to and reviewed by our Membership Committee. It generally will then contact you to acknowledge receipt of your application and to request references and other desired information for its consideration. If the Committee concludes that your firm seems to be qualified and should be further considered, it will so inform the Chairman. He will then invite your firm to attend the next ILF conference. Attendance at the conference is mandatory in order for your application to be further considered. At the conference your delegate will make a presentation about your firm and respond to questions. Attending members will then vote on your application.
What if our firm does not participate in conferences?
Members are subject to being removed for failure to attend conferences.
How do I apply to join ILF?
Please fill in the ILF Membership Application and be sure to fill in all required fields. If you do not have a web site, please be sure also to fax or email your firm bio to our Chairman at chairman@ilflaw.com.
Is the membership process different if our firm has been recommended for membership by an existing member?
Your application will be processed in the same way. However, if our Membership Committee recommends your firm to our Chairman, its application will be circulated to and considered by all members. If no member objects during the ensuing 30-day period, your application will be approved. Your firm, however, will still be expected to send a delegate to the next ILF conference and to make a presentation at that time.
What if we have additional questions about joining ILF?
You may send an email to our Chairman at chairman@ilflaw.com. Your questions will be addressed promptly.
What will be expected of our firm if we become a member of ILF?
You will need to regularly attend regional and international conferences. You will need to timely pay your annual dues, and other approved assessments. You will be expected, to the extent feasible and consistent with local bar guidelines, to publicize ILF and your firm's participation in ILF, including on your firm's website. This should include featuring the ILF logo on your firm's letterhead. You will be expected to comply with ILF's By-Laws. You will be expected to participate on ILF committees. You will be expected to introduce qualified firms known to you to become potential members of ILF. Generally, you will be expected to be an active contributor to ILF and to foster the continued growth and development of the organization.
If you have any further questions, please contact our Chairman, Howard G. Slavit at chairman@ilflaw.com .
